Activities That Will Encourage Your Child To Write

Is your child a reluctant writer? Are they bursting with fun ideas and jokes when they don’t have to write them down, but once it’s time to put pen to paper, they balk at the idea? If so, you may be looking for some activities to encourage your child to write. You can rest assured that these ideas do not just involve sitting at a desk and correcting spellings. Read on to find out more!

Start By Stoking Your Child’s Imagination

Foremost, the best way to help reluctant writers at home is to get involved. As a parent, your job is to honor your child’s imagination and encourage the communication of ideas in a way they are comfortable with. This means not being a stickler for spelling or punctuation, at least not from the get-go. The first and most important thing is to get your child interested in conveying their ideas. This can be done through playing games.

Conduct Fun Activities with Your Child

Making writing fun is essential for getting a reluctant writer involved. Some activities you can try include:

  • A day in the life: This fun writing activity will document your child’s entire day from waking to bedtime. Before your child wakes up in the morning, take a picture of them, preferably on an instant camera, and stick it on a page. Have them write a description below, such as what time they woke up and what the weather was like. Every hour during the day, take another photo and do the same. You may want to set hourly alarms for this purpose. When it’s done, compile these pages into a book for a day in the life of your child.
  • Fortunately/Unfortunately: This fun game is sure to engage even the most reluctant of writers. Start by writing about a fortunate event on each slip of paper, such as “Fortunately, Mom said we can have waffles for breakfast today.” On the other side, your child will have to fill it in with an “Unfortunately” clause, such as “Unfortunately, Max got on the table and spilled the batter.”
