How To Introduce The Concept Of Lifelong Learning To A Child

From time to time, children can feel resentful that they have to attend school while adults seemingly do not. This is particularly true for students who struggle academically or do not feel motivated enough to apply themselves. As a parent, what you can do is explain that learning is a lifelong journey. Adults are learning new things everyday, and it is completely fine if your child sticks with a pace that’s comfortable to them—slow and steady wins the race. Lifelong learning refers to a child’s long-term voluntary actions toward informal and formal education as well as personal fulfillment. Here are some tips on how parents can introduce this concept to their child.

Draw Out Relevance to Daily Life

In contrast to the past, education today focuses on applying knowledge learned in school in a variety of real-world settings. When a child is unable to do so, they may feel that school is meaningless. Encourage your child by asking them about what they did in school, get them to talk about a topic that was introduced in class and more. From there, ask them how they think these skills and pieces of knowledge can be applied in real life.

Encourage Them to Share Opinions

It is no secret that passion fuels learning. When your child is passionate about something, they are likely to want to learn as much about it as possible. Ask your child questions about what makes them happy, what makes them feel bored, and how they came to develop such an opinion. While these questions should be age-appropriate, it is never too early to teach your child to present their opinions in a logical manner and engage in discussion with others about these opinions. Undoubtedly, this is a critical skill that will only get more important as your child grows.

Build Up Confidence

Often, children who do not perform well academically can become apathetic towards learning, believing that they are unable to achieve. This can lead to a low self-esteem and, consequently, a lack of motivation to apply themselves. In order to help your child, let them know that you are not concerned with them achieving perfect grades. Instead, put the focus on them mastering new skills and experiencing new things that will enable them to grow as a person.

Help Your Child Set Goals

Some children struggle with learning because they simply do not see the point in it or have nothing to work towards. When your child has a goal, however big or small, that goal can work as a motivator towards performing well in school. Let your child know that learning the necessary skills and acquiring knowledge in school are the first steps towards reaching their future aspirations.
